Tech Foundations with Mrs. Hood

This school year has been a great one in my Technology Foundations classes! We have learned all about the safety, care, and ethics of computers. We have tackled the very real issue of bullying through technology. We have also studied basics of computers, operating systems, Microsoft Word, and spent a large part of the school year learning how to type correctly using the touch method of typing.
We started off the year learning all of the correct fingers to use for the keys. At first, we took things very slow emphasizing the importance of accuracy, and not speed. Once confident using the correct finger positioning, speed would follow. That has been the case for most all of the students. I’m VERY impressed with the majority of my classes’ progress with typing so far this year. They really are a hardworking group. By the end of the school year, 30 wpm with 99-100% accuracy will be required to receive a grade of 100. The majority of students have already met this goal.
For the month of February, we have been learning all about Excel. We have learned basics of entering labels, values, and formulas. We have also learned and are continuing to learn more advanced skills to improve the appearance of spreadsheets. For Black History Month, we are ending the month of February with a Black History Month Excel Project. I’m excited to see the students create a Black History Timeline in Excel. They will be required to be creative and use what they have learned to make their projects excellent work. I can’t wait to see what all they come up with for these projects.image1image2

Delta Blues

Ms. Smith’s 8th English classes just finished a unit on Blues Musicians from Mississippi as a part of their study on Black History Month.
First the students were assigned a artist from Mississippi to research. The students went to the computer labs for 6 days to gather information and put it into an essay and then make a power point or prezi presentation.
At home, students videoed themselves emulating the artist and plugged the video into the presentations.
Students took a field trip to The Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, MS to make connections with all the material they had researched. Students ate at the Ground Zero Restaurant while on the trip.

Our big question was answered: Yes, people of the past in Mississippi have had a direct effect on the people of Mississippi today.


Don’t Procrastinate!

I’m the world’s worst procrastinator. Periodically, I take time out in all my classes to talk to my students about procrastination. To procrastinate is to delay or postpone action; to put off doing something. In my students’ case, waiting to the last minute to complete assignments, projects, or study for tests. Avoiding procrastination isn’t hard if you follow these easy steps.


  1. Write your assignments in your agenda book. As a sixth grade teacher, we encourage students to use their agenda books given to them at the beginning of the school year. Write all of your assignments, homework, tests, quizzes and project due dates in your agenda. You can also transfer your assignments to your smartphone or any electronic calendar that can help you remember by using the alarm features.
  2. Make a plan on how to accomplish your assignments. If you have a test on Friday, start preparing Monday by studying for it. Do not wait until Thursday night to look at your notes. If you study thirty minutes a night, you would have studied two hours for the test, verses a few minutes the night before. Besides, you will retain more if you take in a little information a day, verses trying to cram information in the night before.
  3. Use your time wisely. Many of our students have study hall. I have to remind my study hall students to use their time wisely. Use study hall to begin on your homework. At times, you may have questions regarding your homework, and you need to use your resources at school instead of stressing yourself (and sometimes your parents) at home. A teacher or maybe other students can assist you if you need extra support. Also, many of our students are involved in extra-curricular activities outside school. You need to use time in study hall to begin working on assignments so you won’t have come home after a long day and still have school work to do.

I believe if you follow these three easy steps, you can begin to make the rest of your school year less stressful and more successful. You will initiate an easy and healthy way of organizing all of your assignments. You will feel better, get more accomplished, and most likely see your grades improve.
