What Drives People to Find an Answer?

This 9 Weeks in 8th Grade English, students have been studying a mystery unit. Our Big Question for the Unit has been, “What Drives People to Find an Answer?” Throughout the 9 weeks, students have been examining the question through a wide variety of different texts including Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart and a short piece on the Boston Molasses Flood of 1919.
It was an interesting piece!

For our extended text, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, students have been tracing the same question. However, they have also been posting their favorite lines from the novel as well.

With this unit, we are really trying to push student inquiry as students begin to ask questions about the goings on in the novel. We have a wondering wall where students post a few of their questions over the book as we read through it. Here is a sample question that one of my students posted on our wondering wall as she read.

Likewise, students have been composing informational papers over the possible cause of death for Edgar Allan Poe. Was it alcohol poisoning, a voter fraud scheme gone awry, or rabies? Through this process, students have been learning the importance of picking the best support for their claims and MLA citation. It has been a treat to see how students have been growing as writers through this process. It has been tough, but they have risen to the challenge for sure! Here are some of the quote intros that students used when citing their information.
